Hanging the Laundry

Performance - 2021 - Het Paviljoen, Brussels

Hanging out laundry is an activity without any prestige. It is old-fashioned and is strongly associated with traditional household chores. Hanging laundry is also an act of love and care, and a meditation.

Randomly collected objects that have a personal value many times greater than the material value of the object are hung one by one on the rack by the artist.

By taking the objects out of the basket, naming them (first the properties such as material and size, then the history of the object and the emotional charge they have) and hanging them on the laundry rack, the maker reveals something about herself.

Saying goodbye to precious objects by neutralizing them is a metaphor for life itself. Attachment to non practical material things is restrictive and does not serve any purpose. Time will eventually subsume all creation
